Definition
A Stakeholder is a person, group or organisation that can influence a Decision, project or Process, or is materially affected by its outcomes.
Human Explanation
A Stakeholder is anyone whose actions or interests can affect a Decision, or who may experience its consequences.
Why it Matters
Considering relevant Stakeholder perspectives improves the quality of Decisions and reduces the Risk of overlooking important requirements, consequences or expectations.
Conceptual Boundary
A Stakeholder does not need to participate directly in delivery. A material interest in the work or its outcome is sufficient. Not every remotely interested party, however, requires the same level of involvement.
Practical Perspective
Identifying and prioritising Stakeholders is an early step in planning projects, organisational Change and Decision Processes. Their influence, impact and information needs should be distinguished.
