Definition

Value is the benefit created for a customer, user or stakeholder by achieving an intended outcome. In Industrial Engineering, value is defined by the extent to which an activity contributes to that outcome relative to the resources required to achieve it.

Human Explanation

Not every activity creates value. A customer pays for the result, not for delays, unnecessary movement or repeated work. Understanding what creates value is the starting point for improving any process or system.

Why it Matters

Clearly defining value helps organisations distinguish between activities that contribute to the intended outcome and those that consume time, effort or resources without improving it. Every improvement initiative should begin by understanding what value is expected and for whom it is created.

Conceptual Boundary

Value is not the same as cost, price or profit. It is determined by the usefulness of the outcome to the customer or stakeholder within a specific context. An activity may be expensive, efficient or technically impressive without creating additional value.

Practical Perspective

Before improving a process, first identify where value is actually created. Optimising activities that do not contribute to the desired outcome often increases cost without improving overall system performance.
