Definition

Systems Thinking is an analytical approach that seeks to understand problems and organisations through the relationships, interdependencies and mutual influence of elements forming a system.

Human Explanation

Instead of examining one element in isolation, it asks how the relevant parts interact, what system boundary has been chosen and how the whole behaves over time.

Why it Matters

Many persistent problems arise not from one defective component but from interactions, incentives, delays, constraints and feedback across the system.

Conceptual Boundary

Systems Thinking does not mean analysing everything at once or avoiding detailed analysis. It identifies the purpose, boundary and relationships that materially affect the question being examined.

Practical Perspective

A change in one part of a system can alter workload, risk or behaviour elsewhere. Decisions should therefore consider indirect effects, delays and the response of the wider system, not only the immediate local result.
